This 52
foot all-aluminum fireboat exceeded contract specifications
in two key areas - top-speed and pumping capacity -
and can perform in the roughest of weather, which it
quickly demonstrated when delivered to the New York
City Fire Department during one of the city's fiercest
Nor'easters. Designed in conjunction with Gladding-Hearn
Shipbuilding, the boat can top 28 knots fully loaded
and has a pumping capacity of more than 6,000 gallons
per minute. The twin-screw, shallow-draft vessel, which measures
16 feet abeam and draws 4 feet, 3 inches, is powered
by Detroit Diesel engines. The straightforward design
makes it easy to operate, even for just two firefighters.
The pumps are separate from the main engines, making
the fireboat easy to operate and maneuver, and maintaining
its firefighting capacity even with the loss of a
main engine. Full-standing height in the engine room
allows for quick access to all machinery. |
